Our Story

A Legacy of Faith. A Future of Hope.

HOW IT ALL STARTED....

Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church was established in 1867 as a Circuit Church in the Buck Hall community of McClellanville, South Carolina. Organized by Rev. James Johnson under the leadership of Bishop Daniel Alexander Payne and Presiding Elder Richard Harvey Cain, Bethel was founded during a pivotal era of hope and opportunity following the Civil War.

From its earliest days, Bethel became more than a place of worship—it became a spiritual home where faith was nurtured, biblical truth was proclaimed, and a strong sense of Christian fellowship was cultivated. Guided by devoted pastors, local preachers, trustees, and faithful members, the church quickly established itself as a beacon of hope and a cornerstone of the McClellanville community.

During its first decades, Bethel laid the spiritual and organizational foundation that would sustain generations of believers, shaping a legacy of worship, service, and unwavering faith that continues to this day.

EXPANDING THE VISION

In the mid-1900’s, Bethel entered a new season of growth. Leaders and members worked together to rebuild after the 1916 storm and dreamed of a new home for the church.  In 1968, property was purchased on Society Road.  After years of prayer, planning, and hard work, the cornerstone was laid in 1979, and our new sanctuary was dedicated in 1980.  Bethel continued to grow, adding choirs, ministries, and programs that strengthened our church and community.

WHERE WE ARE HEADED

From new flooring and a renovated sanctuary to a renovated Fellowship Hall and a parsonage, Bethel continues to invest in the future.  Under the leadership of our 30th pastor, Rev. Dr. Leondra Stoney, ministries have expanded and our impact continues to grow.  Today, we remain committed to our roots while embracing God’s vision for tomorrow – restoring, rebuilding, and reaching more people with the transforming love of Jesus Christ.

By the grace of God and with the support of a dynamic Ministerial Team, Stewards, Trustees, Class Leaders, Officers, and Members, we are still climbing Jacob’s Ladder, and God gets the glory!
